As an Actual Real Gay Man, slash fandom in general absolutely has a problem with this. Invoke other Real Gay Men and how some prefer to exclusively bottom or top all you want, but the gay scene has a LOT more switches (we tend to use the term 'versatile' or 'vers' though) than I have ever seen in slash fiction. (And just as an aside, "switch (vers)" usually means "I'll go either way" OR more usually it's "I need both in my life in with at least some frequency to be happy sexually". Do some guys mean it as "total top for some, total bottom for others"? Sure. Not very many though, as that's not the general accepted meaning of "vers" as used in the gay community, that's a shifting top/bottom preference based on partner choice.)
Top/Bottom dynamics in slash is ruled in the majority by outdated yaoi seme/uke tropes and it absolutely shows. I have seen very few fandoms (and I've been in a lot, both Western and yaoi, I used fandom as an outlet in my younger years as a lonely gay kid in a shitty homophobic town and it's stuck with me) in which one character doesn't get pigeonholed as a bottom (or a top) because of certain, usually overwhelmingly physical appearancebased characteristics. It's that, or a character gets pigeonholed as a top/bottom because there's something in canon ("oh he's so physically strong, I just want to see him get fucked", "I bet a character who is usually in control like that would totally give it up in the bedroom", rinse and repeat) that leads the majority to decide which character "fits" best as a top/bottom. Or they'll use personality characteristics to try and "justify" and write long angry comments about how so and so would never bottom/top because he's too (fill in the blank) in canon as if that has anything to do with how he likes to fuck or get fucked (or both, like lots of gay guys). ...You know, they use seme/uke tropes.
So yeah, that's my secret. Pretty obvious why. Pointing out the rampant tropes in the slash community as a whole pisses people off, as the last secret(s) proved. On one hand? Whatever, you write what gets you hot. Cool. But on the other hand, yeah, as a gay vers guy myself I absolutely have sympathy for people who hate the lack of it, because there is a HUGE lack of it. And it's pretty obvious that seme/uke tropes influence a lot of this, because it's like 95% of what slash fans have seen and therefore consumed while growing up in fandom because it's the massive status quo, and I can see why that pisses people off. Just for the record as well, as someone who would like to see more vers action in fics, I'm not asking for an extended equal flip fuck scene every time. That's not realistic. But I would damn sure love to see some more fic where maybe the top in the scene gets fingered while he's blown, or maybe rimmed, or maybe they start out with the intention of one character bottoming but suddenly he's just in the mood to fuck his lover instead and turns the tables. Or maybe they both finger fuck one another to orgasm while frottage is going on. Or even a simple reference to past bottoming or topping for the top/bottom in the current scene.
It would be nice to see something that feels like actual gay sex between lovers instead of the yaoi trope of Total Bottom Uke getting fucked 84739 times with the rote "touch the penis, short blowjob or handjob optional wherein the bottom interrupts the top with something like "I-I'll cum too quick if you keep doing that!", slide hands back to the asshole, one finger two finger three finger, insert dick, hump to completion". I'd love to read fics that remind me of my actual sex life with my boyfriend. (Also, in before "write it yourself!" I do. A lot actually. Doesn't mean I also don't want to read it too.)
Bonus secret: But secret OP, tell me, what are your thoughts on yaoi? (*Wild round of applause*)
