(Anonymous) 2016-08-20 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)honestly i really dislike the whole uke/seme thing in general. so much of it seems rapey or like it glorified underage/older pairings. i don't like to see those things creep into other fandoms.
i know some people really like it, but i just can't see why when there are so many other options these days. japanese comics are far from the only source of gay fiction these days.
you expressed your frustrations pretty well. i would like to see more people examine whether following uke/seme rolls blindly in fandom is really healthy. not that it MUST be unhealthy - just that lots of times, it is.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-20 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)Huh. I'll say this. This is a really good critique in my opinion. After reading OP's secret I was expecting the pitchforks to come out, and seeing mostly intricate, well-thought-out debate in the comments was a happy surprise.
To expand on all this:
I don't think OP is saying that rigid roles are inherently bad. Hell, even as a trans guy who desperately wants more vers!fic in my life (TMI incoming) I'll be the first to admit I'm pretty bottomy, even if my definition of "bottom" includes a hell of a lot more playing with my top's butthole than cis girls seem to think it does. So it's not like I don't think Top/Bottom roles do exist for some gay guys and bi guys. But I also think the rampant top/bottom rigidity in fandom has very little to do with the actions of Actual Gay Men and Actual Gay Sex, and more to do with the fact that it's aping heteronormativity, both from the parent medium in the case of yaoi, and from the fandom around them.
Acknowledging this and thinking on it a little bit, maybe working through things some, that's a good thing! If top/bottom dynamics are still your thing, then congrats like 99% of fandom caters to you and you still tried which is awesome in my book, but if you discover that you've just been going with the flow, and that the top taking his bottom's dick isn't the end of the world for you and hey actually that can be kinda hot, then cool, maybe we've got some more vers fans in the house too!
