I'm the opposite of the "anime characters are white" fallacy: I used to think all anime characters were Japanese. Even when they lived Western-based fantasy worlds and had names like Lina Inverse. I still assumed they were Japanese-looking and -speaking in "real life."

anime characters don't look white or Asian to me, they look like some "invented" race that doesn't exist in real life.

Depends for me. For example, I always assumed Goku and other black-haired characters with Japanese or Chinese names in Dragon Ball were Japanese, but didn't extend this to, like, Vegeta or the other Saiyans. Even though his features are no less or more Japanese than Goku's. And, also, I always saw everyone in Inuyasha as Japanese, because the entire show is about feudal Japan and Japanese folklore.

But the multicolored-haired characters with Japanese names in a lot of anime shows read to me as...not white, but not Japanese either. Yeah, some kind of invented non-RL race.

You could say that for most animated characters. What about the Simpsons? They don't look like any race, yet it's assumed their white. Why is it so hard to assume that an anime character could be Japanese?

I watched Yu-Gi-Oh as a kid and always thought it was weird that everyone had English names except Yugi and the Kaiba bros. What even is the point of changing all the characters' names in the dub except the protagonist and his arch-rival? It's weird.
