My friend bought into one of those "become a salesperson for X makeup brand and earn money from home" things and now it's the only thing she talks about.

Now she'll only talk to one of us if we want to purchase makeup from her.
I guess that means we're not friends anymore. It's a stupid way to lose a friend.

Ugh yes, that sucks. My mother has lost two friends to bullshit like that. The second you start becoming nothing more than "potential new customer X" for them, it's usually too late.

You're right about the potential customer thing. She stopped talking to me as soon as I reminded her that I don't have money to spend on makeup.

(Oh hey, i wasnt logged in up there.)
In one of the cases with my mother's friends, it was even kinda funny. The lady kept talking at her about all the wonderful advantages of that make-up, and how using cheaper, store-bought stuff was like eating packet soup instead of real soup. My mother, being pretty frustrated about friend's behaviour at that point, basically told her "Oh well, I actually quite like packet soup" (not even a lie) and didn't initiate contact again. She keeps gleefully mentioning her lovely packet-soup-make-up every time she goes to the store to buy a new make-up.

Lmao. Your mother sounds amazing! I celebrate finding dupes for things I would never spend $40 on too.

Yeah she made a post the other day about how the makeup brand does not use chemicals... I nearly got suckered into replying just to smack some knowledge of basic science into her.

The brand my mother's friend was selling actually did have some not too favourable test results (some official eco product test) - I helped my mother dig that up. A mutual friend of her and the sales lady was very appreciative of a printed out version of the test results (she was very annoyed by that lady's behaviour as well but too nice/gentle to tell her no).

What you describe has apparently become very common, and I suspect it's because a lot of those multilevel marketing companies have cultlike aspects to them.

There is a hilarious article on Scarymommy about this--it's titled "3-D Lashes, Jamberry, and other ways to lose Facebook friends"--but when I looked it up, I was disappointed to see that the best part was deleted: all the butthurt whining from women sunk to their eyeballs in MLM schemes, insisting that the author was just jealous of their (incipient) success.

It is really creepy and cult-like. :(

All the posts seem to be about getting people to buy buy buy or telling people how wonderful the opportunity to work for the company is (YOU CAN GET A CAR!!). Having her kidnapped and deprogrammed would be illegal, right? Sucks.

I'm going to go read that article. Thanks.
