I don't feel quite as strongly about it as you do, but I've wondered why people insist on characters having a 'gay past'. Like, when in canon one character has been with his high school sweetheart for years/decades and they just recently divorced, but somehow he still has plenty same sex experience, without cheating. I wouldn't even need the 'gay for you' trope, just admitting all he's ever done was check another guy out would be good enough. It's like people forget that it's ok to not be experienced, or to want to go slow.

Another thing you don't see anymore is the 'gay freak-out' trope, or the 'omg, I had sex with a guy/I'm dating a man' trope. Obviously attitudes have changed, but I imagine if it's your first time you might still need some time to adjust.

You know, I wonder if it's a combination of people not wanting to come across as homophobic and people being uncomfortable with the idea that sexuality can be fluid.

I wonder this too. Like, in my OTP I love that one of them probably does not have a 'gay past' and has developed feelings for another guy, but most everyone in the fandom wants him to have been in a relationship with his best friend in the past. And it makes me sad. :(

This annoys me also.
