I can appreciate how you would feel that way, even though my own feelings are extremely the opposite.

It Was Autocorrect Hell!

(Anonymous) 2016-08-22 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, I made this on mobile (am still on mobile, hello fat fingers!) and it autocorrected!!! One of my good friends is named Dirk lmfao.

Ahaha, holy shit what a stupid mistake and I can't believe I missed that when I made the secret!! Yeah, long story short any other dumbfuck mistakes are the result of my numb, stupid fingers mashing my delicate phone touchscreen like a monkey attempting to write Shakespeare on a typewriter.

I kinda like the "gay for you" trope (and actually, a ton of bad yaoi tropes that are considered problematic) so I sympathize. :(

More people who grew up knowing they were gay = more people writing characters who grew up knowing they were gay.

Eh, I mean, I highly doubt that's the case to be honest. I don't have hard statistics or anything but I don't think that more fangirls knowing they're not straight at a younger age means anything. In many cases they actively retcon the canon sexuality for the character, who is often shown dating women, saying they're not into men (seen a lot of this in weird throwaway jokes more recently compared to series past for some reason), canonly stating they're straight, whatever.

I definitely still see "Gay for You" and "Gay First Time" but it probably depends on the fandom and what you might consider a satisfying amount (I couldn't say there hasn't been a decline). Larger slash fandoms are going to have some of everything, but smaller ones have less of a pool to choose from and prevalent fanons might take over and become ossified. Some characters may lend themselves better to being interpreted as bi or gay because their sexuality isn't explicitly addressed in canon while other characters require some explanation. I have seen straight-established characters retconned as entirely gay and I agree it can be a little jarring, although I mind it less if it's not too common in that fandom or if the whole fic is also some AU about werewolves in space or whatever.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-22 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm in One Punch Man fandom, and actually I made a secret about something like this awhile ago. Saitama is a really popular target for "sekritly always gay and was a total gay playboy~~~" headcanons.

This makes so, so little sense to me. The dude outright states in canon he's not into dudes ("I don't swing that way"), his favourite shirt is a hoodie that literally says "BOOBS" (and specifically implying large ones) in Japanese, and he reads hentai manga for fun. Not to mention it's also shown he's kind of a loner loser who doesn't have much meaningful interaction with anyone under his belt. It always throws me for a huge loop whenever fanfiction drops the "gay retcon" bombshell on me because it's so, so, so far outside of any reasonable interpretation of the character it just makes my eye twitch lol.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-22 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally with you. I can handle learning in fic that a canon straight character hasn't realized same-sex attraction before the fic, and I can buy that a canon straight character has been in the closet all this time with maybe a handful of clandestine hookups in their past, but I loathe "oh btw, gay for always!" stories almost as much as I loathe those Criminal Minds fics that inevitably either start or include in the summary "the team's known that Spencer's gay and Derek's bi for a long time, but what they DON'T know...!"

(Anonymous) 2016-08-22 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind the "gay for only you" trope and lol @ people who cry about how unrealistic it is because I've been the exception before to both a mostly-lesbian and a mostly-straight man.

Yeah it's problematic when people try to shoehorn this into a "you haven't found The One to turn you yet" argument but the same goes for any trope that people try to apply to real life. Or anything people think happened once to some people, so must apply to everyone else.

Double lol @ "gay for only you is problematic and unrealistic but sexuality is fluid at the same time" people.

I don't feel quite as strongly about it as you do, but I've wondered why people insist on characters having a 'gay past'. Like, when in canon one character has been with his high school sweetheart for years/decades and they just recently divorced, but somehow he still has plenty same sex experience, without cheating. I wouldn't even need the 'gay for you' trope, just admitting all he's ever done was check another guy out would be good enough. It's like people forget that it's ok to not be experienced, or to want to go slow.

Another thing you don't see anymore is the 'gay freak-out' trope, or the 'omg, I had sex with a guy/I'm dating a man' trope. Obviously attitudes have changed, but I imagine if it's your first time you might still need some time to adjust.

I too dislike shitty AUs that disregard canon.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-22 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Responded already but replying separately because it's bringing up a separate topic;

I notice the in-between, between Suddenly Gay For You and All The Dicks, is almost never done, too. As in, a character having known they were bi or gay all along but not having had dicks everywhere because they had no reason to act on it until shipmate wandered along into their lives. It seems to jump from total noob to all the dicks, most of the time.

"Surprise I'm gay but I still have never done this before" can be pretty interesting and I don't remember seeing much of it.

I think I can understand that, OP. I get annoyed by the kind of thing you describe because it's usually pretty wildly OOC, but I can get being disappointed because you want to see your slice of human experience in fic.

For what it's worth, though, you're not weird and you're not alone. A lot of people are like you!

(Anonymous) 2016-08-22 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Lesbian perspective...might be a little different from the gay male perspective. I like seeing characters that are already comfortable with their sexuality and dating people of the same gender. My "lesbian journey" came with a lot of denial, pain, and struggle.

I can definitely see why people like reading the journey, but on the other hand, I highly prefer to not see it and often skip fanfics that have it. It's too close to home.

I have mixed feelings on this. If the character in question is explicitly straight, then I agree with you. Handwaving away someone's canon sexuality is not only dumb, but it doesn't make a lot of sense from the perspective of the story their fic is trying to tell.

...But when the character has no defined sexuality or it's left ambiguous, I am really not a fan and I'm glad it's starting to become less popular. As a queer person, it's always reeked of casual homophobia to me. ie. People refuse to believe their fave could be gay, therefore their relationship with this other same sex character is JUST an exception.

If the character is canon straight? That homophobic implication isn't there. But otherwise, it reads just as unrealistic as suddenly handwaving a straight character as having a gay past, and it seems to hint that the author has some problem with a character just being gay or bisexual without strings attached.

I think for me it depends on the character. Like some I could roll with the 'Only Gay for You trope' but others won't work for me, but more often than not I tend to headcanon characters as bi though I don't need them to have been in a gay relationship or had gay sex before in those cases.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-23 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Back in the old days with "only gay for you" was popular I used to roll my eyes. It's like can't the character just actually be gay/bi. But now that I've gotten into fandoms like you stated... I kind of want some of the "only gay for you" and first time feeling like this for someone of the same sex. Grass is always greener.

I guess an even mix of the two would be good.

No comment on the actual secret itself, but I feel the need to note that I never shipped JD and Turk at any point while I was actively watching the show but that photo is giving me strange tingly feelings about it

I totally get that, OP. For some characters it just feels right. Sexuality can be complicated!

I'm mostly annoyed at the "weekend are high school boys but for some reason, we have the gay sex knowledge and experience of weathered porn star veterans" that's so prevalent in sports anime fandoms.
