Does that surprise you? It only saddens me. American Gods is a legend. If the TV show somehow bombs (HA! As if!) it will never spoil the perfection of that novel. Gaiman for Global Overlord 2016.

I love the book myself but tbh I can't fault people for balking at trying to read it. Gaiman's narrative style can be annoying to some and the book is long. Add Nanansi Boys to the mix and it's no longer just a casual read.
I'd only recommend it to long-time fans of the genre.

You don't need to have read Anansi Boys, though. They work as standalones.

FWIW, my mum is not a big fantasy reader, but she wound up reading it and thought it was great.

I read the book, and I don't remember that scene. Not all that surprising, given that I read it ~13 years ago.
