Do you have a favorite word?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-23 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
If so, why that word?

Ricochet

I just like the way it sounds and is pronounced.

I also love Czech words without vowels (like smrt), especially when trying to get people to pronounce them.

"Smrt" is how Homer Simpson spells "smart."

Susurrous because of the way it looks.
Ethereal because of the way it sounds.

Also facetious and behoove because I have good memories attached to those.

I like breviloquent. I have no idea why.

Escutcheon. I like the way it sounds.

Huh.

Nine-year-old me might have agreed with you. Also, "Excelsior."

For some reason I like sort of obscure homophones of other more common words. Like tocsin.

Cromulent. The way it sounds reminds me of pastries.

Re: Do you have a favorite word?

It is a PERFECTLY CROMULENT WORD!

This makes perfect sense.

Hornswoggle. Because say it's a fun mash of tongue chaos.

Defenestration. It's such a hilarious word for a HILARIOUSLY VIOLENT act. It's the act of throwing someone or something out a window. And the word is funny, the act I think is damn hilarious because frankly, I've actually thrown a few things out the window before. Usually broken pencils that are broken in such a way that it'd be impossible to re-sharpen them properly.

I've always liked "discombobulated". idk if it's my very favorite though. I like a lot of words.

Honestly I'd have to say "cunt", because it's the only swear word that I haven't (yet) used so much that it no longer feels cathartic. I wore all the edges off of everything up to "fuck" before I turned twenty, and eventually the same thing will happen again, but for now it's a very helpful word for me to have when ranting.

Ostensibly.

It's just so convenient and under-utilized.

Boustrophedon, because it sounds like some kind of dinosaur, but it actually means switching between writing from right to left and from left to right with each register.

In English, probably... 'justice'. It has a very nice sound to it, I think, and fits the meaning well? That or 'fuck' which is also really great. In Russian maybe давай (davai) since it's a very common thing to say but I had a friend who always made it sound like the coolest/sexiest word ever.

I like a lot of words a lot, just because of the way it feels to say em. Trachea, labyrinth, reticent. Marvelous.

I did realize though recently that I LOVE the word chassis, cause I only recently realized how it's actually pronounced. I'd only read it for years, so I thought it sounded like chass-is, and then "whaaaaaattt? It's 'chassy'?!!!!" It's adorable!

I have had a long-standing fondness for the word "hyperbole", ever since I discovered (via an early episode of BtVS) how it is supposed to be pronounced. I even used it as my online ID for a while.

I have a huge tendency to use "probably" a lot, and a fondness for "notwithstanding" too, but I don't use it much.

Switchback. Love the way it sounds.

Also PHANTASMAGORIA!

Lagniappe because I like the meaning (free bonus), the way it sounds (lan-yap) and the memory of how I learned it (reading The Spy in the Ointment, a book I was inordinately fond of in my early teens)

Currently?

Coprolalia, or "compulsive use of obscene language". Lit. "shit talking" lol.

Also, arachnodactyly, which describes excessively long fingers that characterize a few genetic disorders. Lit. "spider fingers"
