Friendly reminder that this scene is canon

Apparently there's also a scene where those two mention that there's a romantic relationship a third character isn't quite perceiving, although they don't specifically state that the relationship is with each other. It's pretty coy even by Tales standards.

If I hadn't heard that they were canon, I would have no clue that there was meant to be any romantic hints in the game at all. I haven't beaten it, but I'm well more than halfway through and I feel like I'm missing something everyone else saw.

It's a very cute game, and I like the group dynamics, but I'm not getting the shipping vibes (and I'm usually all about that). And yeah, I got the chat scene feotakahari linked to, but it read to me like the joke's supposed to be that Sorey's being dense and taking Zaveid's words too literally.

I think a lot of the subtext got lost in translation as well, so that doesn't help.

The again, this is the type of relationship where, as OP said, were it a guy and a girl, very few people would have any doubts whether or not its meant to be romantic.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, even my straight guy friends who have played the game thought it was pretty clear that they were meant to be a couple.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-24 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, what game/anime/whatever is it?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-24 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Tales of Bokunopico.

Tales of Zestiria.

On one hand, I totally get you OP. Those parts of fandom are awful...
On the other hand, I'm not part of the Tales fandom, but I know most of the games via my dash and the only part of this particular fandom I see are people screaming OFFICIALLY CANON!!! and they're starting to become really obnoxious... But hey, I'd rather have them be canon too if it comes down to it.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
I think the reason why they are screaming is because when the game came out we exactly had the "bros broing it up" reaction from most male fans and any translated material was quickly swept under the rug because "it's a translation". Now that the anime takes steps toward implying that the pairing is indeed canon people like to boast about it.

There was a drama when the "antis" (can we use that name for them?) called out the fan who translated skits and such pre-release that she is blinded by her yaoi obsessed mind and her translations are faulty. Needless to say, ever since that the novel's translation is halted.

I ship this pairing to high hell and back and I am so happy with the way ufotable is handling these two, but it riles me so much that there are so many people screaming CANON, or HOMOPHOBIC to people who don't ship it. Like jfc you're giving these Japanese creators way too much credit (I think I've read somewhere that they've backpedaled and Mikleo is listed as just the childhood friend in some guidance book, and not his one and only). People are nitpicking everything into a spin on how THIS MUST BE CANON. I'm bisexual but these two are unfortunately not our representatives until I get someone straight out saying that these two are gay, and only then will I have a massive fucking party. But until then, reading between the lines, desparately trying to wring some sort of offical sanction from the guys who fucked up with marketing Alisha is not gonna cut it.

One of the producers (I think it was Baba but I can't remember for sure) outright stated that a relationship between Sorey and a woman would never work. At this point they've pretty much done everything short of saying "THESE TWO ARE BANGING" which would never happen even if it were a M/F couple because Japan is Japan and isn't as outright explicit about relationships as we are in the West.

Heck, I can think of a lot of canon M/F relationships in anime and games where the creators never explicitly said the relationship was canon; it was simply understood through their interactions in canon itself.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember reading this too and iirc it was because Sorey was pure or something, and it was specfically about sinking Sorey/Alisha or Sorey/Rose. Maybe it's just my cynical mind but I didn't think it was an outright confirmation that Sorey/any other woman would be shut down. Either way, I just want something more than just tip toeing around the issue and this kind of teasing and people going CANON with just hints, but yeah, Japan is Japan.

You clearly have no idea how Japanese society and especially the Japanese entertainment industry (like game companies in this case) work.

Fanservice is all nice and great but the second you move from the fanservice to stated fact, your game (or anime etc.) immediately risks getting put in a corner you would not want your business to be in. Because that's what it is, first and foremost: A business. And these businesses are immensely afraid to lose potential customers by saying outright "yep, the main character of our game and his ~best friend~ are totally gay" - because yes, there are a lot of people (even in the oh so open and tolerant west) who would not buy the game if it has icky gay people in the main cast. And even if not, it's still a very prevalent fear publishers have.

dude, I'll admit as I wrote my comment, I got more and more wound up so it's not the most eloquent, but that was exactly my point. From the guys who fucked up marketing Alisha, I did not expect canon confirmation of Sorey/Mikleo.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
i don't simply because i hate zestiria and the bl part of tales fandom is already terrible enough they don't need more fuel for the fire.

can't ship it because i just can't see sorey in a relationship beyond platonic/familial. honestly can't see any of the characters in zestiria in a romantic relationship expect maybe zaveid which he'll never be since he's a bad flirt.

also everyone felt so flat that i have zero interesting in shipping anyone.
