If you have a concern with a large company, does it do any good to:

A. Send a complaint to them by email;

B. Write on their facebook page;

C. Tweet them?

The first one is okay, although if it's a controversy that's all over the news, chances are they already have 300 emails saying basically the same thing.

As for B, honestly, I get the impression the people who run company pages are often cogs in the machine. They might totally agree with you, but still have to type up a standard "we hear your concerns," because if they tell their bosses they agree with you, they're not going to have their poorly paid internship anymore.

Also a lot of corporate FB pages I see are run by people who don't even know the company's own policies. See; Starbucks.

I think it depends on the type of concern; if it's quality issue I would do facebook or twitter, whichever one they are more active on. But if it's more substantive, I would look into contacting by phone.

It really depends on the company, what their channels of communication are and what you're trying to accomplish.

I actually used to know someone who worked for a big corporation and whose job was to comb through all of the incoming email from the general public and forward or otherwise deal with things as needed. He did respond personally to certain things beyond just a form letter. I don't know how much he dealt with himself or forwarded vs. just ignored and how much of the stuff he forwarded ever was dealt with satisfactorily, but at least with a big company there is probably someone who actually looks at the email.

This was before Twitter, and Facebook was only just getting started, so I don't know how those options compare.

I would go with b or c. I'm not sure how much good it actually does, but at least those comments are posted publicly and other people will be able to see them and make a more informed decision about whether or not they want to utilize that company's services/whatever

I've tweeted complaints on my twitter at both my bank and phone/internet company. Both got me results; with the bank I got someone a bit higher up in customer service to contact me via phone. Also got results wrt our internet from the phone company. I didn't dm them on twitter, merely used their twitter handle in my complaint posts. They then contacted me.

I once used one of those contact forms on a company's site. I heard back and I think they sent me a coupon or transferred money or something. And I noticed that a while later my issue with the product was resolved. I imagine they probably got more complaints than just mine, but still, nice to see.
