Re: Worst positive headcanons/interpretations of characters you love
(Anonymous) 2016-08-24 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)It smacks of the same Feanorian apologizism that excuses the Feanorians of the First Kinslaying.
Re: Worst positive headcanons/interpretations of characters you love
(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 12:11 am (UTC)(link)I'm mostly pissed because I LOVE the Elrond/Maglor relationship (and I like, but am by no means a stickler for, the idea Elrond viewed him as a father figure) precisely because it's so delicate and tricky and hard to define and strikes such a precarious balance and has so many contradictory aspects to push and pull it in multiple directions, and bullshit like this is just like flinging all that delicate tricky nuance into a crude, simplistic heap.
But yeah the Feanorian apologism taints a lot of my interaction with fandom surrounding the Feanorians too. It's often an unpleasant surprise to see something believably and interestingly positive about one of the Feanorians, only to later find out the fan who wrote it was coming from a "The Feanoriams are the REAL victims" stance rather than a "people are so multi-faceted and can both do good things and do unforgivably evil things" stance.
Re: Worst positive headcanons/interpretations of characters you love
(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 12:18 am (UTC)(link)However, I never read them as seeing Maglor as a father and when I first encountered this headcanon, I had a visceral nope reaction. But I was live-and-let-live about it for awhile. Sadly, I've now come to associate it with Feanorian Apologists (sorry, I know that's not you) and they've completely ruined the Maglor and Elrond relationship for me. It was sweet and interesting once and now I don't want to touch it with a hundred-foot-pole. :(
