I've read the book and I find Gaiman's writing style fairly accessible, nothing off-putting (except for one particular sex scene that's going to crop up in the show, so you're going to encounter it either way).

I'd be able to give you better advice if the show was airing and we had an idea of what it's like. Right now, read the books so you don't get spoiled while it's airing, I guess?
