I've never heard that myth. I loved House but I always hated that it gave people the impression that one could just push through chronic pain if they focused their attention on something else. My family tried to convince me that I'd be fine if I just went back to work because then I'd have a purpose and wouldn't notice the pain anymore, just like House! And they weren't the only ones. It took 9 years of pain management to reach a point where I could actually live again, not just survive. It wouldn't have made for interesting viewing, so I don't fault TPB too much but it got really tiring having a fictional character in a tv show held up as some sort of proof that I was somehow lacking.
