Everybody really loves Pan's Labyrinth but I can't fucking stand it. Couldn't even finish it, I hated it so much (and I don't usually leave movies unfinished).

i really messed up the italics there but tbh i like the sense of urgency it gives to my hatred

I only re-watch it for the Pale Man scene. I don't care about the rest of the movie, if I'm being honest. The setting and characters are ok, but the plot is lukewarm at best and doesn't make me wanna watch it again.

Oh my god I went into that movie thinking, "Oooh dark supernatural/magic film." And came out twitching a bit all, "He bashed the guy's face in with a bottle... and they showed it..."

Yeah but it turned out to be JUST dark escapism, not actual magic/supernatural. And there's a huge difference between (IMO) dark story and gratuitous gore.

I think the movie is depressing because, as is the case with a lot of del Toro's movies, it's not the supernatural creatures you need to be afraid of, it's humans.
