I love King. I recently reread Koontz that I loved as a teenager and, sorry to say OP, IMO Koontz just didn't hold up. He can construct a well written sentence, sure but (with the fics I reread anyway) his villains were complete caricatures. Also he loves his female characters being threatened with sexual assault.

According to TV Tropes, he started out with villains who came from bad circumstances, but switched to villains who were born bad because he didn't want the reader sympathizing with them. I think there's an unstated assumption in there somewhere.

I'd say the actual progression of Koontz villains is 1) bad guys come from bad circumstances; 2) bad guys are born bad; 3) bad guys are literally the Devil and the good guys are literally blessed by (Christian) God.
