What food would you like to eat again?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-27 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
What's a food that you ate a long time ago that you really want to eat again?

Whether it's because it was delicious and you really want to have it again, you didn't like it but you wonder if your taste has changed, or just out of nostalgia.

I went to Chinatown in San Francisco and visited a little restaurant. I got a big bowl of wonton soup which was one of the best things I've ever tasted. I live on the East Coast and planned to visit again someday. Unfortunately, they went out of business.

Chocolate souffle. It was so amazing. So, so amazing. And no place in Oklahoma makes them (that I can find).

Also, I once had a chicken gyro at a music festival. It was the greatest gyro I have ever eaten. I now think that I only thought that because I was dehydrated and really hungry.

Green tea ice cream. Had it years ago, haven't been able to find it since.

Some sort of strudel or baklava that I bought in a little shop on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. I never found the shop again. I reckon it was one of those magical shops.

This is not really what you're asking but...both my parents and all my grandparents have been dead for quite a few years now and the odd thing is that one of the things that I miss most, that can make me saddest, is their food. I don't even really care about food. It's something you need to survive and I like certain things better than others, but I don't care about new recipes or restaurants or anything like that. But if I could, I'd tell my younger self to learn how to cook exactly how Mom or Dad did, even if Mom apparently wasn't a good cook (objectively) and Dad (and his parents) used way too much grease or butter. And tbh I kind of wonder if the food was actually that great or if it's nostalgia and the fact that it's literally impossible for me to have any of it again. Still, for people who have access to the (decent) people who made the food of their (happy) childhood: ask now.

Peanut Butter Boppers. I only ever had one as a kid, but it was right up my alley, and then they were gone. (It was like a peanut butter log dipped in chocolate and rolled in crunchy things. Google image it.)

KFC extra crispy chicken. I'd love some but it's so greasy and probably wouldn't taste like I remember.

Last time I had KFC, it was so incredibly salty I was thirsty te whole afternoon (it's not that it tasted too salty, but I could tell it was due to my sudden and powerful thurst).

I loved KFC as a kid but I can't go back anymore.

Since I moved to Asia, cherry pie has stopped being a constant in my life.

Île flottante. I had them as dessert at a hotel in Mexico when I was a child and I loved them so much. I made some myself a few years back and it was quite good but I didn't get to make them again. I need to repeat that sometime.

The yellow cake my aunt used to make every Sunday in summer: dense and moist, baked in a tube pan, heaped with fresh berries, with whipped cream from a can!

And it seems to me the peaches of my childhood were always delicious.

Once upon a time there was a supermarket chain in Australia called Franklins. It had a no-name brand called No Frills. I used to love No Frills onion flavoured 2-minute noodles.

The pity is Franklins deleted it, and then the company went downhill, started deleting everything interesting until it completely died.

I still miss those onion noodles though.

Samosas. The kind with the potatoes and peas in it. I haven't had one in years, and I really wouldn't say no if one appeared in front of me right now.

Rhubarb. My family used to have a rhubarb plant, years ago.
Irvines pies. (Brand of pies that were common in NZ supermarkets. Haven't seen them in Australia at all. Better than 90% of the pies I've had.)
French Vanilla ice cream. Goody Goody Gumdrops ice cream. Hokey Pokey ice cream. (Store brands often had them in NZ. They're mostly only available in the fancy gourmet brands here.)
These, uh, cheesy "meat product" (they didn't have enough meat to legally be considered sausages) things my family used to get. "Sizzlers" or something.
"Jam raps" from fish & chip shops. (Like a doughnut, except long and filled with jam. And absolutely covered in cinnamon sugar :D)
Basically, uh, half the stuff I grew up with in NZ. XD

I miss dessert so fucking much. I've been on a diet for over 2 and a half years and I lost 143 pounds so obviously it works and I'm a lot healthier but holy shit do I miss dessert.
