not the op here and I kinda rolled my eyes like 'oh god not again' because I don't want to see this wank, but I agree with the op, mainly as an artist myself

You're right, I can't draw for anything :D

I admit, I used to use any pretty fanart I found to make icons with. But now? I still do it, but credit the sauce if I have it. If not, I just don't use the icon.

I'm saying cry moar because it's been DONE TO DEATH. We get it already.

No use getting butthurt but it, when the characters aren't even YOURS to begin with. If it was your original characters, then I can understand, but it's fucking FAN ART.

If it bothers you so much, draw original stuff and complain when people use that.

I bet people like you don't realize what the typical Japanese response is to people stealing their images.

They take it down or block people outside of Japan.

The thieves are pretty much ruining it for the rest of us who feel that we're legitimate fans of these artists.

Yeah, I've seen this happen more than once, it sucks.
However, after contacting the artists, usually they say they just want credit and/or a link to their site when someone uses their art for icons, layouts, or whatever. They don't really like seeing entire pieces in backgrounds, but again, with credit it's acceptable. So what I've got here *points at icon* is okay because a) I've credited the artist in the icon's description, and b) I'm not using the entire image or claiming that it's mine. (I haven't distributed it to a comm either and just use it for myself, but uhh I'm not gonna start that.) This is of course just in the case of the Death Note fanartists and doujinshikas that are actually reachable, so I can't really speak for other fandoms, but there are a hell of a lot of DN fanartists and so far not one of them has bitched a person out when asking for permission.
If by "stealing" you meant "a person claiming to have drawn something they didn't" though, obviously the original artist would get pissed, as would anyone. That doesn't really happen too much to be noteworthy, in my experience, because anyone would out the thief really quick.

Woe. Manga artists are artists too. There's no difference.

Maybe the typical japanese fanartists shouldn't have rods up their asses. Might solve a few problems.

If someone is using a fanart than they clearly enjoy their art. If they are CLAIMING that the ART is theirs, than I see the problem. Any other time? Fuck off. Don't put it on the interweb than.

I can draw quite well, tyvm. I've done pieces for my friends as gifts. I don't mind if they icon them, even if that's not what I made them for.

And I could give a shit less about fanart in icons, mine included.
