The fannish trend of redefining pedophilia so broadly that it includes pairings between two adult characters is really annoying.

If age gaps squick you, that's fine. Own it, and avoid fics or art about it, and let us all move on with your life.

But don't try to shame other people because they are reading about consenting adults who happen to have more of an age gap than you, personally, find acceptable.

This is dangerous--making pedophilia something you can define absurdly broadly (40 year old and a 20 year old--pedophilia!?!) dilutes the term and also makes it into a weak and ridiculous one, which isn't helping any actual victims etc.

That sounds really stupid. Age gaps definitely squick me but I would never call that pedophilia unless the younger one was actually a child. It's just Not My Kink.

Ugh, don't remind me of the times I've seriously seen people try to argue that aged up ships of underaged characters are still pedophilic because you're "still thinking of the characters who are canonly underage in sexual situations" or something like that...

Yes, because it's so gross being attracted to people who have hit sexual maturity. (Emotional maturity might be another story, but there's a difference between attraction to a body and getting with that.)

idk I'd say it's still gross when adults are attracted to people who are in early-to-mid sexual maturity. like an adult attracted to a thirteen year old? I don't care, that's still disgusting.

yeah agreeing with other anon. Actual ephebophilia is still pretty gross, at least as I understand it - it's being attracted to people who are pubescent, but not actually adults. (I don't think being attracted to a physically mature 17-year-old is ephebophilia though obviously acting on it can have legal implications in some places. I'm talking like, middle schoolers who are currently developing sexually)

I've seen it stretched to be that any characters in a show aimed at children being shipped is pedophilia, no matter the age of the characters.

So, you know, Phineas and Ferb's mom and dad are committing pedophilia by being together.
