When they're happening in real life? No.

When they're happening in entertainment media? You bet!

Do you think that there's any connection between messages in entertainment, and peoples' beliefs in real life?

No. I actually think that's a very insulting idea, as though people are too stupid to understand the difference between reality and make-believe.

I'm not saying there's a 1-to-1 relationship, or that people literally believe that what's happening in a film is true. But I do think that people are shaped, in part by the narratives that they consume. So, for instance, when you're talking about the original Birth Of A Nation, people don't think that what happens in that movie is the literal truth. But existing racist narratives are reinforced and reproduced by the racist narrative and framework of the film. The sense that stories of a certain kind are typical and archetypal is reinforced.

if you don't grasp the idea that make-believe stories are made up by people who live in the real world and have beliefs, priorities, and unquestioned assumptions about how the world works that are shaped by the reality they live in, you might be at least a little willfully stupid

Please tell me you don't actually believe that they never influence each other. It does not require overtly believing there is no difference for that to happen.

...entertainment media both reflects and telegraphs "real life." It is a part of real life.

listen kid

1) entertainment media both reflects and reinforces real social structures, including oppressive ones, and imagining that it is created and consumed in a vacuum separate from those social problems simply because it's entertainment is stupidly naive

2) nobody is saying you can't continue to enjoy things that aren't progressive/perfect!

entertainment media both reflects and reinforces real social structures

I'll buy the "reflects" part but not the "reinforces" part. That denies individual agency.

Weird that you're defending audience agency but outraged at the idea that someone might use their agency to point out troubling themes in a piece of media?

WTF? I'm not outraged by either one? This thread is about things we find annoying.

If anything, using one's agency to point out troubling themes is proof of how little power entertainment media has to reinforce those themes.

NAYRT

Individual agency is a thing but so, I would argue, is social conditioning. We are at least in part the product of our environment and situation. Cultural narratives are part of that background.

I'm honestly confused about how admitting that people are influenced by things negates their agency
