Most of RW's films were critical flops, they're just lovingly remembered because kids who loved his movies in the 90s are adults viewing their memories of them through nostalgia goggles.

It was probably about 50/50, really, but anything schmaltzier than Dead Poets' Society tended to flop. I'd say more people focus on the good stuff in retrospect than pretend that Toys was a masterpiece. The nostalgia goggles might come out for things like Hook and Jumanji, but they're the kind of movies that are loved in spite of themselves. Alas, no children love Patch Adams.

I liked Toys. It's silly, but I liked it.

Lots of people do. But it's not hard to see why it was panned by the critics.
