I'm not sure I see how it's a problem that people express their personal distaste with terrible things

I mean idk about you but I do find rape pretty...well...gross. It is a lot of negative things to me and one of them is gross. It disgusts me.

"Gross" has definitely changed in meaning recently and it's a broader term than it used to be. That happens.
