I've had my hair dark for years, almost black. I was born blonde and it gradually darkened to a medium brown. I think I look better with it dark though.

But I've wanted to experiment and try other things (like red). But as far as I understand, I'd have to let it grow out first, and I'm not willing to do that as I hate my natural color. So I guess I'm sticking with the dark hair for the foreseeable future.

You can bleach your hair / use a hair color remover. You might have to do it twice, depending on how dark your hair is. Just make sure to nurse it back to health afterwards with good hair products.
