Post your hair adventures/hair dreams here.

It's funny how the second I decided to have my hair buzzed, I've felt annoyed with the mop I currently have and I can hardly wait for my appointent at the salon.

The reason for why I'm not doing this by myself at home is that I've had my current hairdresser along for the ride with all the experimentation with wild colours and going from long hair to sidecut and then long mohawk. I just wanted to have her with me on this last step.

I dream for my hair to be even longer, and for me to be better at braiding it. I can do a ponytail braid okay, but I really want to be able to put it in a French braid without feeling like my arms are going to fall off and then ending up with something loose and shitty anyway lol

How long is it now?

I used to have Herman Li of the band Dragonforce as my hairspiration as his mane goes past his ass, but eventually I had to face it that my hair was never going to go longer than mid back.

I want to get better at braiding too but my hands just don't seem to know what to do with hair no matter how often I try doing more than a simple side braid. I look up all these gorgeous braids that I'd love to try and my hair would look great in but I can't do them.

I am so useless at braiding my own hair and it makes me sad because in the warmer months I've love to have my hair in two french braids or just in some kind of elaborate braid in general. But alas.

A grocery store near me sells cheap jeweled headbands in a variety of styles. They're pretty, and they are the comfortable elastic type that I can wear without getting my brain pinched. I've bought a bunch of them and I love them all.

I love when things like that happen!

When I was around 18, I cut off all my hair. Just slightly longer than buzzcut-length, and quite jagged, since I did it myself.

My dad actually called my mom at work and suggested I see a psychiatrist.

I liked having it short, though. Most people didn't say anything bad. Now I usually have it somewhere between bob-length and shoulder length.

Ah yes, of course there must be something wrong with you if you get a dramatic haircut! /sarcasm

I somewhat agree with the notion that cutting ones hair signifies change/starting over, but I don't agree that it's a bad thing or that ones value ( in attractiveness) is diminished.

I want hair like Lapis from SU but I fear that's limited to the realm of fiction.

I think you call that reverse bob or something... doesn't Ramona from Scott Pilgrim have a similar hair cut?

It could be pulled off with some product, could it not? Blue might wash out fast, though, and there's all the bleaching to consider.

I wish I could dye my hair as easy as my light haired friends. Alas, getting my hair light enough to dye the colors I like takes soooo much bleach and damages my hair so much... the struggles of having black hair...

I've had my hair dark for years, almost black. I was born blonde and it gradually darkened to a medium brown. I think I look better with it dark though.

But I've wanted to experiment and try other things (like red). But as far as I understand, I'd have to let it grow out first, and I'm not willing to do that as I hate my natural color. So I guess I'm sticking with the dark hair for the foreseeable future.

While it was thrilling to shave my head for a while, I'm starting to recall why I can never be bothered to keep my hair short. It just grows so damned fast. And haircuts are expensive. In a lot of ways it's infinitely more practical to just keep a ponytail that you hack a few inches off every year.

Mine grew back to what most people would consider long already even though I cut it above my shoulders earlier in the year. My ponytail is about 25cm long now, maybe longer.

People always tell me they wish their hair grew like mine, but I'd have to cut it every few weeks if I wanted to keep it in a short style.

I want my hair back.

I'm tired of not being able to style my hair for shit because my ugly scalp is showing though my barely there strands and can't hold any cute styles or accessories. I can't even put it into a loose ponytail without it feeling like what little hair I have is being ripped out of my head.

~MY HAIR STORY~

[personal profile] skeletal_history 2016-08-30 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Idgaf if this is tldr; I feel like writing it.

I always had long hair as a little girl, and then at age 11, I watched Errol Flynn for the first time in "Captain Blood" and was smitten with him, so I begged my mom to cut my hair short like his (basically a pageboy/bob-type-thing -- ~dreamboat~) because apparently, I didn't know if I wanted to be him or...do vague and nebulous things I could only guess at with him.

I had short (between chin- and shoulder-length) hair until my early 20s, when I decided, hey, why not find out how long my hair will grow before it stops??? So I just stopped getting hair cuts.

I never did find out the answer, but my hair grew to hip-length before I cut it. I wore it up in a bun, back in a braid, or up in a twisted set of braids 23 hours of the day, only taking it down to wash it. It was scraggly as hell because I hadn't grown it out properly and it didn't look good let down, which I would never do anyway because I would sit on it -- but it was actually super easy to take care of. Wash, air dry, braid, end process. I was working with Native American children in Montana by this time, and this is probably cringe-worthy to admit but whatever -- I liked that I didn't stand out from them as Obviously Not From Around Here and White, with my long dark braid, as much as my blonde friends who worked with me.

SO THEN, in another fit of cultural appropriation, I cut my hair when I moved from Montana to Massachusetts, because it is a custom among the people I worked with to cut their hair when they are in mourning, and I loved being in Montana and working with my students with all my heart, and moving away was really painful and I grieved.

Then I had a series of absolutely heinous shag haircuts, because I was going to the stylist my mom went to and she guilt-tripped me into staying with this woman for a couple of years. I literally looked like the forgotten member of Def Leppard for a while; my hair was SO BAD. It was mortifying to think that anyone who saw me must think I chose to look like this. I coped by getting really into 1930s fashion and pincurling my hair every night to hide the monstrous layering.

Finally, I moved back to my home town and met my current stylist, and I learned that the Single Most Important tip to getting a good haircut is (surprise) finding a stylist whose aesthetic taste jibes with your own.

In my case, I now have been wearing a chin-length bob for 3 years, and I love it. I feel like I look most like myself with this hairstyle. Not Errol Flynn, because I have a square face and square jaw and could never dream of being as handsome as he was, even if I were a man.

I dream of using henna on my hair to dye it (I'm think Lush' s caca rouge/marron) BUT... I'm worried it will loosen my curl pattern/ change my hair some how.

I also am (unrealisticly) worried that cutting my hair short (shoulder to chin length) will somehow result in my hair never growing back the same/at all.

Sigh. For reference, I have keep my hair natural & it tends to be dry :/

I've been wearing my hair up in a bun lately because it's been So. Freaking. Hot. I discovered Spin Pins a few month back, so it actually stays up, and the bangs are finally grown out enough that they are no longer actually bangs.

Today, though, I wore my hair down. And one of my co-workers was shocked that my hair was so long. (It's mid-back length, which doesn't seem all that long to me, but I've spent a lot of time around Faire and SCA folk so I'm used to seeing people with hair past their waist.)

It's actually in pretty good shape.

I cut my undercut down to nothing a few months ago. Now I'm trying to grow it back out and it's reached a really awkward in-between stage where it's too long to be short-and-spikey and too short to sweep back or to the side. Very frustrating.

My hair dream is to have very fabulous colored hair. Blue or shades of silver or something. I have no time for upkeep of this, though. :(

I wish I could have really long hair, but I feel my fallout rate has hit a point where I can't get much longer than shoulder-blade/waist. There's also a simple fact that there's a length that just gets annoying to handle, so I am now keeping it between shoulder and shoulder-blade. Shoulder length is just long enough to ponytail easily.
