This is a fandom where people who ship two brothers together then seriously claim that neither character involved is even the slightest bit gay.

NOTHING would surprise me about this fandom anymore.

I hardly ever see that happen tbh. Most people I've seen who ship Wincest think that neither brother is gay in canon...which is true, so I can't really fault them for understanding the difference between canon and fanon.

Most people who ship Wincest, sure. But I've seen meta that argues that it's not really gay if they're soulmates, and fics that take a moment for one of the boys to think about how he's not really gay, or for them to talk about how it's weird, they're not really gay but ...

At first, I was really creeped out that this supposedly modern fandom would revert to old school We're Not Gay We Just Love Each Other. But now I suspect that it's less about "our boys are not icky gays" than it's a reaction to (some) Destiel shippers insisting that their ship is For Great Justice and Bisexual Representation.

I'll stop wanting homophobia stories when someone proves that can string together three sentences and understands their source material's characterizations.

There may be a ton of fics dealing with homophobia but I've yet to find many good ones.

MLP fandom used to get so many of these that there started to be an active backlash against them. Hatred of gay folks doesn't really fit with a kingdom of happy colorful ponies.

I don't know anything about Supernatural, but there are fandoms where, due to the setting, it's entirely appropriate for homophobia to be an issue characters have to deal with in fic that isn't just short fluff or PWP, and others where it's so much less likely to be an issue, it feels weird and forced if it's a major thing in a fic.

I used to read a lot of Dean/Cas and I have no idea what you're talking about. I feel like at least half, and probably more, of the fanfic I read totally ignored homophobia or took place in an AU where it didn't exist.

Yes! I think that's it. Personally, I'm with OP and would love to see some non-hackneyed plotlines that aren't treating a real life, painful issue so ham-handedly (for the most part).
