The Pollyanna part of me wants to think "oh, this is people dealing with what they have to deal with in real life."

The cynic thinks "it's just a bunch of straight girls going for an easy drama in an otherwise plotless, pointless fic."

Yes! I think that's it. Personally, I'm with OP and would love to see some non-hackneyed plotlines that aren't treating a real life, painful issue so ham-handedly (for the most part).
