Do you follow trends?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-30 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Just wondering:

Do you follow trends deliberately - as in, making an effort to do what's trendy just because it's trendy?

Or do you do whatever you want - go with the trends if you like them, ignore them if you don't?

Or do you deliberately try to distinguish yourself from other people? Or get annoyed by things that are trendy just from seeing them too often?

I honestly have no idea what trends are happening outside of memes.

I was starting to formulate an answer to this and realized I'd been thinking, not of trends, but of memes.

If I've ever been trendy, it's probably by accident, since I'm perpetually clueless about what's popular. But it's not like I deliberately avoid them. Which means I might wake up trendy one day and have no idea.

I don't follow a trend if I don't personally like it. But my attitude is pretty much 'you do you, boo' when it comes to other people doing it.

Mostly the second one. Sometimes I lean towards the third, less often the first. I think I tailor my presentation a little bit to suit the audience, without even realizing it (and I think most people do this). But I really can't be arsed to do enough research to stay abreast of regular trends in every area. I got nerdy shit to do yo, and I like what I like.

I am super out of tune with trends. So I only notice them if they get really popular. If I like whatever the trend is, I'll involve myself in it.

I buy some version of whatever cute professional wear Target has a thousand of every season if that's what you mean

Replace "professional wear" with "workout clothes" and that is me.

Not deliberately, though I like having nice clothes.

but let's face it, I'm weird even when not trying

I don't make an effort to do what's trendy, but I make an effort to know about it. Even if I dislike a trend, if it's relevant to an interest of mine I should be able to talk about it with other people.

I like keeping up with trends because I like new and shiny stuff, and I like being up to date. I don't wanna be that grandparent who doesn't know how to use a computer in 20 years or who doesn't understand the new slang, even if I don't use it myself.

That doesn't mean I follow each and every trend blindly, though. I'm just conscious of them.

I just want to be aware of all my options.

I try to, you know, just do my own thing, regardless of whether it's trendy or not. Although there are times when like... I'll get into something, or appreciate or like something, or whatever, and have it be just a thing that I happen to like for whatever reason. And then someone will point that thing out as being in some way trendy, and it feels... weird and inauthentic.

Like, even quite normal, mundane things - like, if it's some coffeeshop, and I like the way they do things, and I see some other places that are doing stuff similarly, and I'm like, "Oh, that's cool", and I go about my day, right? And then someone says, "Oh that kind of coffeeshop is really trendy." And it feels so strange because it's like, here I was thinking that I thought I liked for specific, everyday reasons. But clearly I was caught up in some larger wave - clearly there was some other phenomenon at work here, some other kind of explanation, that I missed, and I was deluded in the reasons that I thought I liked it. It's weird and insidious and it makes me feel weird.

Am I crazy for this?

When I was in high school, among my friends "trendy" was a genuine insult, usually said with a sneer. It meant you were a shallow dimwit who had no personality, no tastes of your own.

I just read an Etsy blog post about the "top new trends in vintage decor," and...idk, that strikes me as incongruous and unsettling.

https://blog.etsy.com/en/top-vintage-home-decor-trends-2016/?ref=hp

It feels..wrong somehow to treat past trends that were thought to be ephemeral but have stood the test of time, like they are ephemeral again.

Plus, I think of people jumping on the "let's hang busted old tennis rackets on our walls, all right!" bandwagon and I start laughing.

Following trends and avoiding trends both take to much work.

When a fashion trend happens to match something I like, I'll buy stuff and then keep wearing them.

Wesley Crusher did not go off and be a traveler. He either dealt with issues and stayed in Starfleet, becoming a junior officer on some other ship that isn't the Enterprise, or he quit the academy and hooked up with a crew of eccentrics, traveling the galaxy, scavenging bits and pieces from here and there and building new and interesting shit out of it.
