Part of my nostalgia for pokemon is due to the hype uniting all us primary school children with one common interest. The peer bullying kinda took a break/returned at a later date for me.

Sorry that you got bullied for your interest instead, OP. That's bitter. Pokemon Go is not all that deep and it'll be a much better game in one year or two, though. If you still want to get into it then. That's the idea I'm consoling myself with, at the very least :P

Pretty much this. As someone with nerdy interests, I'm still amazed by just how mainstream Pokemon was to my age group. It's great when you see a lot of people geeking out over something.

I guess you can same I'm the opposite of OP, in that I find it amazing that Pokemon Go has taken that fact to another level. My 45 year old co worker had the highest level in the office and he knew nothing of the games or show. It's just fucking fun.

yes, your personal history informs your reaction to its popularity now. to us it feels like a renaissance of that community spirit. for OP it just painfully contrasts with their history.

that reminds me of a friend around my age and who was kind of coquetting with the fact that they *never* used to be into pokemon until now, since they were hanging out with an older crowd (who were 2coolforit). I was so, so offended, lol. fortunately I didn't say anything.
