I don't get the Barb stannning, either, but I don't get the 'barb sucks' that's in this thread.

Barb is the character that's in just about EVERY 80s school drama story--the faithful, loyal friend who watches her bestie suddenly get SUPER popular. The way the 80s narrative worked, the popular people are all creeps, and the bestie doesn't realize it till way late, and there's her Barb there still willing to be friends.

Barb's storyline didn't go that way, but she's an echo of that character. The fact that Nancy goes to such lengths to try to find her is important for Nancy's development, but ALSO Steve's. Without Nancy's obsession with Barb, he would still be a complete jackass.
