First rule of the internet: never stop talking about Barb.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-02 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
She's a homely looking outcast that places like tumblr and ontd sees themselves in

Aren't you a motherfucking ray of sunshine.

She comes across as perceptive and smart and empathetic in her brief screen time, and her attitude towards socializing and stuff reads as anxious and ambivalent in a way that I and a bunch of other people find relatable.

It's not hard to account for, even if her character doesn't speak to you.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-02 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Perceptive? Really? Where did you see that?

Yeah, she just seemed like a Debbie Downer to me. And a bit of a pushover. Which are valid characterizations but eh, not anything I'm terribly interested in.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-03 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not a fan of that type of character. Why did she keep track of Nancy's bras? Why did she care?

SAME. Before I saw the show I saw some post that was like "Be a Barb, not a Nancy," so I went in fully expecting Barb to be awesome. And she wasn't. Nancy was awesome. Quite honestly I think it comes down to slut-shaming. Nancy drank a beer and had sex, Barb didn't, so for a certain number of people Nancy = worthless and Barb = amazing. Gross.

My friend who recommended me the show was like "omg you'll love Barb!!" and she was just about the only character I didn't love (besides Mike, who's boring, but at least I have an opinion on him; I'm totally neutral on Barb).

(Anonymous) 2016-09-02 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked Barb but I felt like the fandom reaction to her was incredibly overblown. I relate to her too, but I don't understand why people think she's literally the best character on the show and is their "Queen"

Same. She worked, the dynamic between her and Nancy was easy to pick up, now she's dead, that's it. Can we move on?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-02 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
JUST LIKE US

(Anonymous) 2016-09-02 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Neither do I. She was fine, but I don't see why people are so certain she died "for no reason" or her character was thrown away.
Her death was well integrated into the plot. I found Nancy's search for Barb and her guilt heartwrenching. Sometimes the characters you're rooting for die and it doesn't mean the show fucked up.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-02 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
She seems relatable enough for many, while at the same time having so little personality that projecting is easy for them.

(I, too, heard about how great Barb is, then I watched ST and... no, sorry, she's just there to be the friend/plot device and nothing else. I've seen better throwaway characters)

(Anonymous) 2016-09-02 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure about other fans, but I personally related to Barb a lot more than Nancy. I saw a bit of myself in Barb - awkward teenage with more attractive/assertive friends, trying to navigate being a supportive friend and knowing when to say something.

On the point of her being a throwaway character, Barb is a character type - the awkward, non sexy female high schooler - that very rarely gets explored, while Nancy's storyline is a dime a dozen. Hence #JusticeforBarb.

Also, while I don't dislike Nancy, I feel like people forget that Barb was at that party to drive her and also because it would be obvious why she came if she went alone. Barb's presence was necessary social lubrication. Nancy used Barb, not in a terrible way, but in a way that she could have been clearer about e.g. not asking her to stop her if she seemed like she was going to do sleep with Steve. She also could have been more sensitive in the scene where she tells Barb to go home.

Someone needs to explain the ridic popularity of this show period, I watched the first ep and fell asleep. Yet no one will stop talking about it?

I really liked her from the moment I saw her, so I should have none she was on the chopping block

Why must I like minor characters who keep getting killed off?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-03 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get the Barb stannning, either, but I don't get the 'barb sucks' that's in this thread.

Barb is the character that's in just about EVERY 80s school drama story--the faithful, loyal friend who watches her bestie suddenly get SUPER popular. The way the 80s narrative worked, the popular people are all creeps, and the bestie doesn't realize it till way late, and there's her Barb there still willing to be friends.

Barb's storyline didn't go that way, but she's an echo of that character. The fact that Nancy goes to such lengths to try to find her is important for Nancy's development, but ALSO Steve's. Without Nancy's obsession with Barb, he would still be a complete jackass.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-03 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I agree so much. She was there to push Nancy into the larger story and give her growth. She was ok character at best but she had no more impact on me than the diner owner was killed in the first episode.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-03 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Well, if you don't like her, you're SOL because she's going to be in the second season of Stranger Things

I swear there's a whole subset of fans who only watch shows to obsess over random minor characters like that, then wank endlessly when they die or disappear. It's one of those migratory things.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-03 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
You don't understand how people could have different tastes?

There are 8 episodes. She appears in 5 episodes. It's not that unthinkable that people might have taken notice. Just because you didn't, it doesn't mean others operate the same way as you.

Because she wasn't conventionally attractive and actually gave a shit about her friend. She reminded me of me and my own friendships and even looked like a friend of mine.

That's why I'm disappointed with her outcome.
