(Anonymous) 2016-09-03 12:31 am (UTC)(link)As someone who was a total Pokemon kid in the 90's, I know what you mean. I was a fan when Pokemon hit the States, and while the fad of it was popular, I had a lot of friends who were into it too. During the RBY era and part of the GSC era, I wasn't ostracized for my love of the series. Kids looked to me for help with the game.
Once Ruby and Sapphire came out, Pokemon was suddenly total shit according to the general kid population. As I stood by the series, the "friends" I had now bullied me. I didn't wear the series on my sleeve (wearing merch, constantly talking about it, etc.), kids would just harass me without provocation, sometimes even physically hurting me. The verbal harassment continued through DP and part of BW, until finally while I was in college, no one gave a shit anymore and I could enjoy XY in peace. The only people I could talk to about the series were online, either because local fellow fans kept to themselves as well or there just weren't any around.
Now that Pokemon Go's come out, I have seen the exact same people who gave me shit as a child going out and playing the game, acting like they've been a huge fan this whole time. Some have even tried to offer advice to me (I tell them "I'm good" while massively rolling my eyes on the inside). From overhearing them, the only "real" Pokemon are the RBY generation, and everything they've made afterwards are "stupid and gay." Where I live, the fad has already died. You're lucky to see one person playing on any given day. And honestly, I'm glad. Call me an awful person, whatever, but I think it's childish for people to treat others like shit because they're a fan of something the bullies don't like. There are a ton of series I absolutely hate, but I'm not going to treat someone horribly because they're a fan. It only matters if they're a kind person.
OP, I understand what you're saying, and I'm sorry. Life can be very ironic, but I hope that someday you'll be able to enjoy things in peace. The Pokemon Go fad will die, and then only the real fans of the series will play the game. Just be patient.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-03 01:05 am (UTC)(link)People can think my post is trolling, but if it makes OP feel better and know at least one other person has been through the same thing, I did what I came here to do.
