Cultural appropriation is definitely a thing but I'm so goddamn sick of white people taking it on themselves to call it out because 90% of the time they're fucking wrong.

How so?

NAYRT

Because they think it means doing anything from another culture. Which it doesn't. If it's not something sacred that shouldn't be done by outsiders, and if they're not using it to profit themselves at the other culture's expense, it's not cultural appropriation.

But white people will post pictures of like, a white person wearing a kimono and call it cultural appropriation. When the most likely reason a white person would wear a kimono is because they went to a Japanese festival where professionals who are Japanese will have booths set up where you pay them to dress you and explain the process. That's not appropriation, that's sharing.

Oh, I'm a goof and misread your comment. I thought you were talking about white people being wrong when they called others out on "appropriation." I thought THAT one needed an explanation.

My bad.

I agree with this, by the way.

Well, there are definitely cases where people wearing kimonos is culturally appropriative, though

I agree with the broad thrust of your argument but i'm just saying

Not if for example POC wearing cheap knockoff Dirndl dresses or dumb cartoony viking costumes isn't as well.@

Are cartoony Viking costumes actually part of a living, vibrant culture that's significant to anyone living besides metal fans and neo-pagans, though

Fuck off with this false equivalency bullshit
