I don't get why people are trying to argue whether subtext was 'intended' or not. In a pairing-centric fanfic, a good author (the ones who talk about the subtext, yes) are trying to use certain interactions to show how they think the two characters might be able to work together. I'm not a RoyEd shipper, but I can see places where a writer might choose to work with, if they found that an interesting thing to explore. Am I going to argue the creator intended it? No. But I also don't think the only shippable pairings ever are the ones Condoned From On High - and if you do, that's great, that's your opinion, don't read my yuri.

Because it's only subtext if the author intended it. I very, very much doubt that Arakawa or the writers of the anime wrote scenes meant to be interpret as that Roy and Ed are longing beautifully for each other.
