I hate Opera today
Jeez, defensive much?

That being said, popular pairings are usually popular for a REASON.

I'll happily admit that Ed and Roy have a particular chemistry in their interaction. But every time I see a Roy/Ed fan - and yes, the huge ones, the mature ones, THOSE WHO AREN'T STUPID FANGURLS INTO IT FOR THE BUTTZEX - talk about the SUBTEXT--- yeah, that is when I stop taking them seriously. Maybe if Clamp had written the series, but FMA is about as shounen as it gets.

There's a reason Harry/Hermione was so huge: because she was the closest girl at hand, never mind that he showed far more interst in other women. As far as I can tell, the popularity of Roy/Ed has more to do with them being more or less the only central guys who are good looking, and not related or married. Waaaay too much fluff around for people to be taking every fucked up aspect of the relationship seriously, no matter how much they claim they were attracted to the "psychological" aspects.

Yeah, I am defensive. I HATE having my intelligence measured by such idiotic, flawed standards. It made me want to slap somebody, but I posted a wordy, tl;dr secret instead.

Actually, most shônen have enormous amounts of subtext, between several characters. FMA is an exception, I think, in that it hasn't - I've only seen subtext for Ed/Winry, Al/Winry, and Roy/Hawkeye. Or, well, there was that slight Winry/Schiezka vibe... but none for any Ed/male character.

Still, they're pretty much friends by now, with great respect for each other (that they usually hide with insults), and their personality types could be an interesting match. Moving it a long to romance in fic shouldn't be too hard.

You forgot Ling! Nobody should forget Ling. XD

Also, Ed and Envy have had a rather interesting couple of encounters, and though he's undoubtedly remorseless... well, I don't know how far you've read, but he's got a great story (though extemely creepy).

His roommate in the movie holds his hand.

WORD.

FMA is about as shounen as it gets

More than that, like most shounen it's about friendship/family/betting yourself+choices (the usual); and...ya know, fandom + friendship/bonds = OMG THEY WANT TO HAVE SEX. Duh I do it too in a series (*cough cough KH*), but...come on. FMA is also pretty straight forward: Winry admits she's always loved them

Maybe if Clamp had written the series, but FMA is about as shounen as it gets.

I really can't imagine anyone could say this with a straight face who's seen actual shounen shows.

As a general genre classification, yes, it's more shounen than shoujo. But that hardly means that it is TEH ULTIMATE EPITOME OF MASCULINE and therefore is never allowed to have any themes or imagery that don't appeal to The Male Audience.

Arakawa, in the first place, basically created the Roy Mustang character to appeal to the female audience, and the company that produced the anime played up a lot of the relationships and put in a lot of Roy/Ed imagery with the deliberate goal in mind of attracting female viewers. They didn't create this image (http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:7P7GyNulX3Ov4M:http://www.notashrimp.com/wallpaper_files/edRoyWhiteDay.jpg) or the many others like it by accident, you know.

For that matter, as the above commenter said, shounen series often have tons of subtext because they emphasize male-male relationships (friendship, rivalry, devotion) above male-female romance, creating an environment where it's a lot easier to see relationship chemistry, both sexual and non, between two male characters.

(Anonymous) 2008-04-12 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd really like to know how, exactly, FMA qualifies as shoujo. Seriously. Girls watch shounen (you have heard about the Gundam Wing fandom, right?), and women write shounen, and this does not stop it from being a genre that is targetet at male readers. And you know, I tend to think that the slashy pictures of Roy and Ed (the one where Roy has glasses and a hand on Ed's shoulder is much, much worse than the one in which they have Valentines gifts for the girls) counted about as much as the two tons of official artwork of the two of them with Winry and Hawkeye that would make anybody not familiar with the series believe it was a kooky romantic comedy.

Subtext is part of the text: it is intentional. That some readers read more into it than Rowling intended does not make Harry/Hermione any more canon, and the fact that shounen series usually has a lot of significant development between male characters? Does not make it romantic subtext.

(Anonymous) 2008-04-13 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'd really like to know why the intended audience for a show matters in fandom and fanfic, which flaunts the canon anyway by being fan-made.

(Anonymous) 2008-04-13 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
I was talking about shipping based on canon arguments, not fanfic, but if you really need it spelled out: because of the difference between a Fai/Kurogane fan claiming that the author meant for the tension to be interpret as sexual/romantic, and a Naruto/Sasuke fan doing the same. Clamp are infamous for the inclusion of m/m pairings and heavy homoerotic subtext - Kishimoto has made a nod to that fanbase, and then satirized it mildly.

Slight tangent

(Anonymous) 2008-04-12 10:46 am (UTC)(link)
Actually the reason Harry/Hermione was so huge was that Rowling was far better at developing interesting and believable friendships than interesting and believable romances. Rowling convinced me that Harry and Hermione cared about each other. She never convinced me that Harry cared about Cho, or about Ginny.

(Anonymous) 2008-04-13 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
FMA is about as shounen as it gets.

Five words for you: "Fist of the North Star".

(Anonymous) 2008-04-13 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Or how about "Berserk?"

(Anonymous) 2008-04-13 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get why people are trying to argue whether subtext was 'intended' or not. In a pairing-centric fanfic, a good author (the ones who talk about the subtext, yes) are trying to use certain interactions to show how they think the two characters might be able to work together. I'm not a RoyEd shipper, but I can see places where a writer might choose to work with, if they found that an interesting thing to explore. Am I going to argue the creator intended it? No. But I also don't think the only shippable pairings ever are the ones Condoned From On High - and if you do, that's great, that's your opinion, don't read my yuri.

(Anonymous) 2008-04-13 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
Because it's only subtext if the author intended it. I very, very much doubt that Arakawa or the writers of the anime wrote scenes meant to be interpret as that Roy and Ed are longing beautifully for each other.
