On one hand I see the temptation. When DBZ started airing back in '98 I became a huge anime fan and my mother and sister teased me, mercilessly, constantly, until I'd be in tears. (My mother had... issues to put it mildly) until I eventually moved onto other geek things. My now-husband has a particularly vivid memory of them inviting me out to eat dinner with them and then starting in on "Hey, remember when you watched those STUPID Japanese anime shows? KAME HAME HAAAAAA KAME HAME HAAAAAAA" yelling it out loudly in the restaurant until I went out and sat in the car and cried while my husband endured the "What's HER problem? We were just making a joke!" from them and paid our bill and we were both able to escape.

Now some years later my younger sister is a huge anime fan and all of a sudden my family thinks it's the coolest and best interest in the history of ever and they're supportive and encouraging and occasionally want to know why I don't want to talk anime with my sister.

But at the same time, like the OP, if it being popular saves other kids from going through what I went through I'm entirely for it. More fans means more stuff.

That's really fucked up. :( And I think I'd be a bit resentful too in your position even though I generally agree with OP. It's a sibling favoritism thing, and that goes beyond the norm even for persecuted nerds.

Your husband sounds great and I'm glad you have him.

And I'm impressed with your positive attitude even after dealing with your mom's and sister's bullshit.

Yeah, my brother had a tendency to do this. What's really weird is he's the one who introduced me to anime/manga. It made it hurt more.

On the other other hand my relationship with my brother is really fucked up. Sooooo

my family were almost the exact same way - except now i have the last laugh and i don't talk to them anymore. :)

(of course, that's not the sole reason i don't talk/interact with them anymore)
