Webcomics with imperfect art

(Anonymous) 2016-09-07 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
My friend has an awesome idea for a comic and she wants to do something with it but she's intimidated and thinks her art isn't good enough.

Does anybody know of some really good comics that they read despite the art style?

Hyperbole and a Half is shit art but everyone loves it. The Oatmeal is one-note art, but everyone loves it, too.

I think the art in Freefall is fine, but it gets negative comments on FS:

And of course there's XKCD:

Order of the stick. It relies pretty much on the writing.

Gunnerkrigg court had a somewhat wonky artstyle at first.

I can think of a few comics that fit that description. I'll start with webcomics, because I can link to those. Oh, that's what you asked for anyway!

I personally find the painted art on Same New Woman charming, and I like the story, but it's definitely an...odd visual approach.

End of All has had some issues with different artists, but is pretty readable despite starting out a bit weak. It's not yet a "really good comic" in my opinion, but it has some intelligence to it.

One thing you see over and over again is that artists grow into their art as they do it a lot. So you have to "start before you're ready." You'll get good by doing.

mob psycho 100 and one punch man are both by ONE.

beware that some people take his example to the obnoxious extreme saying that you should be drawing your comic anyway because some better artist might adapt it, like OPM.

ONE's style is actually very expressive and his comedic timing, aka panelling is also good. still, while he has improved, his art is pretty ugly.

Lint started out quite wonky, but regular drawing gave the author the opportunity to improve. Same would likely happen to your friend.

Schlock Mercenary had wonky art to start with, but it got a lot better.

I think if the art is heartfelt enough (AKA you can still see the artist has put a lot of effort into it, and it's not just a copy+paste of the same panel with different text again and again), the quality doesn't matter to me.
Art doesn't have to make sense.
