The only time I didn't enjoy school was middle school. I'd just moved from the east coast to Colorado, from an extremely competitive/high expectations school district to an extremely lax one. I was immediately singled out as a "teacher's pet" for getting stuff right and not stumbling on my words when I read out loud, and that just gave everyone an in for whatever else they wanted to pick on me for.

I ended up failing 8th grade because I was too insanely depressed to do anything. But after the rest of that class moved up to high school, and I stayed behind a year, suddenly like no one was mean to me anymore? The next year when I went up to high school, I made some senior friends who told me that it had honestly just been that class being full of assholes. By then they'd all pretty much forgotten about me anyway, so high school was actually great! It was a weird situation.
