Did you like school?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Any and all levels welcome for discussion. Any classes you loved more than others?

I loved elementary school. After that, it was a pretty mixed bag. I loved English and history, hated math and science. (I actually sometimes wonder whether a push towards STEM would've been good for me in that regard; I've come to really appreciate science in adulthood because I've found opportunities to truly understand it beyond having to pass a test.) I hated the kids, though.

In college, I made some good friends so that was fun, and I loved taking classes. However, I was an awful procrastinator when it came to homework, which was an issue. I think mentally once class was over, I was just done, even when I genuinely loved the subject.

I liked school for the most part. I had a few bad teachers in high school (my art teacher really didn't like me and thought I was a smart ass), but most were great. English, French, and science were my favorite subjects. College was awesome and, if I ever manage to save enough money, I'd love to go back and study different things.

The only time I didn't enjoy school was middle school. I'd just moved from the east coast to Colorado, from an extremely competitive/high expectations school district to an extremely lax one. I was immediately singled out as a "teacher's pet" for getting stuff right and not stumbling on my words when I read out loud, and that just gave everyone an in for whatever else they wanted to pick on me for.

I ended up failing 8th grade because I was too insanely depressed to do anything. But after the rest of that class moved up to high school, and I stayed behind a year, suddenly like no one was mean to me anymore? The next year when I went up to high school, I made some senior friends who told me that it had honestly just been that class being full of assholes. By then they'd all pretty much forgotten about me anyway, so high school was actually great! It was a weird situation.

I loved all levels of school. I love learning and writing papers. The only classes I didn't like were math classes and classes that had heavy focuses on math.

I really like being in class, listening to lectures and asking questions. There comes a point in every class where the teacher has to tell me to be quiet and give some other people a chance to talk and answer questions. I just love learning.

I don't like having to prove that I learned the material. I've gotten to the point where I don't even pay attention to grades. I haven't checked my grades at the end of the semester for the last three years and I'm happier that way. It's just not what I care about. I care more about my sense of how well I understand everything. So now if something feels like busy work that's not going to help me, I just don't worry about it. As long as I do well enough to get credit for the class so I didn't waste the money, I'm good. But the lack of stress means I'm doing better than ever before because I do great on tests and I don't burn out by the end of the semester.

Not really. I like listening to lectures and asking questions, but actually doing the work is another story.

I have never and will never hate anything as much as I hated going to school.

School was so bad growing up that my first conscious thought of the day was "I hate school" even on weekends and during the summer, especially if I was woken up rather than coming awake naturally. It'd been that ritualized. I dealt with some pretty horrendous abuse at school and the staff didn't give a single flying fuck because I didn't play sports.

I liked music and math.

Everything else just sucked shit and was boring to me. It's no surprise I didn't do so well in non-music and non-math classes.

Loved high school. Hated college.

I was a band geek in high school, and I loved band, orchestra, and all the related stuff way more than any actual classes. I was relatively fond of my zoology and AP bio classes though, and Spanish. Math could go sit on a cactus, and English I was just straight-up bad at (when we were doing literary analysis type stuff which was almost the entirety of junior year).

I would not want to go back to high school; by the time I graduated I was pretty done with some of the more stifling aspects of being a teenage student at home. But I loved it while I was there.

I loved school. If I could afford to go back just for funsies and take never-ending classes I would.

I did hate my English classes in high school though, but that's because it was my favourite subject and we had the worst teacher. She was one of those no fun, everything must have a Super Serious and Deep Meaning sorts of teachers and it was just terrible. No creativity was allowed and that's just tragic for an English class.

no. I was bullied all the way through college and it licked elephant ass.

At first, yes. My first two years of high school were some of the happiest days of my life. After that, well... things deteriorated pretty quickly. My best friend decided I wasn't cool enough to hang out with anymore, so she literally ignored me for the rest of the years she attended the school. Our mutual friends liked her better (she was the "queen bee" of the group) so basically everyone hung out with her while I: 1) ate lunch alone on the opposite side of the eating area, 2) ate lunch in the bathroom, although this was only once or twice if I recall correctly, or 3) spent lunchtime studying alone in the library.

After that, I tried making new friends, but the only kids who seemed interested in hanging out with me were "nerds" like myself and it was kind of awkward because we all knew that no one wanted to hang out with us. In my final year of high school, I tried to get into another group of friends and almost succeeded - until I was basically bullied out of the group by one of them. I was so happy when I graduated.

As for the teachers, I had some nice ones and some really good ones. One of them was a bully who taught my geography class once every two weeks. I dreaded her classes so much. I was also a kind of teacher's pet and everyone knew it, so while my grades were pretty good, it didn't exactly help me make friends.

In university, the (social) situation improved, but only because there was no one there to bully me. Also, rather than leave me out of groups because I got good grades or because I liked "nerdy" things, the students just ignored me in general unless I approached someone or asked a question. I could count on one hand how many friends I made there, and I haven't heard from any of them since graduating years and years ago. I was also happy to graduate from university because it meant I was finally free of the shitty education system, free of classes with fixed times, free of forced interaction, etc. After uni, I was finally free to do whatever I wanted and have never felt any desire to go back.
