I kind of agree, kind of disagree.

I agree in the sense that, like, there are definitely times when people use narratives like we're talking about here as ammunition in what is actually just bullshit fandom infighting. And that kind of thing, I agree, it's usually bullshit, and should be thoroughly ignored and not engaged with.

I don't agree in the sense that I do think it's important to critically self-examine what your own patterns are, and to try to diversify your tastes where possible (as you say you do! which is great!). It doesn't have to be something where you're either a Villain or a Good Guy, of course. But, like, an awareness of that kind of thing is good. And I don't think you should close yourself off from critical conversations about diversity in media, and I think that's an easy temptation.

So, yes, a lot of times the way that people talk about it is BS, but don't let throw out the baby with the bathwater.

not OP, but I think your point is only relevant if a movie/whatever would be less likable to OP if, all other factors the same, the characters were more diverse.

Considering there's less big-name media with diverse casts to start with, it's not really fair to assume that OP needs to be critical of her own tastes.

I don't mean to imply any personal failing to OP. I don't think the kind of self-criticism I'm talking about here is a reflection of personal failing generally. I think it's more about an awareness of structures and pattern. I do think OP probably needs to have that kind of critical self-awareness, but only in the sense that I think most people do, including me.
