"Even diverse properties aren't perfect" and they don't have to be?

I agree with you for the most part, but that seemed weirdly out of place here.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
OP is showing off their ~insider lingo~. In Hollywood they often call TV shows or movies "properties".

Wow.
Such an edgy and unique opinion.
We've never heard that before...clearly you are one of a kind. 👍👍👍

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Um... an 'edgy' opinion because the OP is happy for diverse shows but admits to liking a lot of things with white men in it?
I'm honestly baffled as to how this is 'edgy' and where your clear sarcasm is coming from.

Oh and OP I agree. People shouldn't be berated for what they like. If people have an issue then they should blame the creators for constantly bringing out things with lots of white men. Diversity is proving to be popular, so hopefully the creators/studios are coming around (ie the last Star Wars, Orange is the New Black etc, even the Marvel movies are starting to become very diverse).

I kind of agree, kind of disagree.

I agree in the sense that, like, there are definitely times when people use narratives like we're talking about here as ammunition in what is actually just bullshit fandom infighting. And that kind of thing, I agree, it's usually bullshit, and should be thoroughly ignored and not engaged with.

I don't agree in the sense that I do think it's important to critically self-examine what your own patterns are, and to try to diversify your tastes where possible (as you say you do! which is great!). It doesn't have to be something where you're either a Villain or a Good Guy, of course. But, like, an awareness of that kind of thing is good. And I don't think you should close yourself off from critical conversations about diversity in media, and I think that's an easy temptation.

So, yes, a lot of times the way that people talk about it is BS, but don't let throw out the baby with the bathwater.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
not OP, but I think your point is only relevant if a movie/whatever would be less likable to OP if, all other factors the same, the characters were more diverse.

Considering there's less big-name media with diverse casts to start with, it's not really fair to assume that OP needs to be critical of her own tastes.

I feel like these days fandom, especially from certain quarters on Tumblr, are now just spinning their wheels looking for anything to get in a snit about, be it lack of diversity or the ~wrong kind~ of diversity.

The latest example is how FTWD fans are busy snitting at each other over "lack of POC rep" because Chris Manawa is "actually played by a white person".

Oh, PLEASE, do me a favor and fuck all y'all selves off a tall cliff ya fuckin wankers.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, because getting mad and telling people who disagree with you to kill themselves makes you look so much better in comparison.

Needs more tildes, scare quotes, and caps to come off as more reasoned and mature than the other party.

Blah, blah. You don't have to "justify" anything, quit whining.

I was over it 5 years ago tbh.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing that gets me are the people who insist a show would be better if it had more diverse characters. No, a show would have more diverse characters if it had more diverse characters. Quality doesn't hinge on skin tone, what's between someone's legs or who they're attracted to.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
S.A.
Signed a genderqueer nonwhite asexual, just in case I need to show my "cred" to have an opinion.

[personal profile] ketita 2016-09-09 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this.
Sometimes people will rec stuff and basically go "this book has genderqueer characters!" "this show has strong women!" YES BUT WHAT ARE THESE THINGS ABOUT.
If I don't care for the story, I'm not going to magically care for it just because it has representation.

"Better" is so subjective as to be nearly useless, though. I generally assume it to be a shorthand for "I would like this thing better if -- "

To someone who likes spaceships, Star Wars will be "better" than Citizen Kane. To someone who likes monster hunters, Supernatural will be "better" than Masterpiece Theater. And to someone who likes diverse casts, Steven Universe will be "better" than Sherlock.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-10 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
And not all narratives can be diverse. Diversity is great, and whereever the narrative allows for it then it should be a consideration, but you cannot always have a diverse cast in a narrative.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-10 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a point, though, at which a lack of diversity is ahistorical and/or indicates a failure of worldbuilding. Firefly would've been better if the Tams had been Asian. Harry Potter would've been better if it had had more than one gay character out of its cast of hundreds/been less relentlessly heteronormative in a world where--according to Rowling--being queer is no big deal. Westerns are better when they include black cowboys. Stories set in ancient Greece are better when they include m/m relationships. Etc.

I play and write porn about imperalistic tacticool manshooters so full of white guys they ooze mayonnaise and no one has ever asked me to "justify" this.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-10 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Cat. Good cat. Pretty cat.

But yeah. I get what you're saying. I pay no attention to what anyone says. That's easy for me as I'm more on the fringes of all of my fandoms though- I don't do art or publish fic, so I don't get any of that nonsense directed at me.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-10 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I'm over it, too. Critique culture has sucked all the fun out of fandom.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-10 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
No doubt thanks to the photo, I managed to misread this as "I'm always on the lookout for ... more diverse cats."

TORTIE!

(Anonymous) 2016-09-10 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
One of the saddest things is that I like a good in depth discussion on how media and society interact and what messages are chosen to be pushed. And how little things, like the Bechdel Test, point out tropes that are just so common they go unnoticed.

And this Critique Culture has killed that because the minute you pull out something like "I wonder what happened in Race to the Edge, did they change writing staff? Because last season Astrid, Ruffnut, and Heather featured prominently and nearly every episode passed the Bechdel test and then this season they were background scenery." It's a screaming match of "Stop sucking the fun out of it and just enjoy the show!" and "That's horrible we need to tweet death threats to the producers! How dare they! Lets make lists of transgressions!"
