Yeah, this.
Sometimes people will rec stuff and basically go "this book has genderqueer characters!" "this show has strong women!" YES BUT WHAT ARE THESE THINGS ABOUT.
If I don't care for the story, I'm not going to magically care for it just because it has representation.

DA. Yeah. I have a friend that keeps reccing Steven Universe to me this way by talking about all the issues it goes over.

And I'm still going 'I have no idea what the plot of this thing is. Is there a plot? Why do you never talk about the plot?'

(I still haven't watched it and I don't care to, but I've never had something so relentlessly recced to me before based on the issues it apparently tackles and it's diversity without any mention of the plot.)

Yeah, I can see how that might happen. In case you wondered, part of the reason may be that it's pretty difficult to watch SU for the plot. What plot there is is interesting, but it's very slow-moving, and the series is mostly slice-of-life - until you get the occasional whammy episode.
It's not bad, though I'm not crazy about it.

It's basically a coming of age story with an intergalactic war going on in the background, but is almost relentless optimistic in spite of that. Also, there's lesbian space rocks and magic.

Same here, anon. I stare at SU ep summaries and writeups and I'm like, "what is this even all *about*?" I still have no desire to watch it.

Alien war veterans raise a little boy.

Exactly. I watch stuff for the stories, not because of how diverse it is. Representation means nothing to me if it's not a story that I'm interested in in the first place.
