I think if fandom is the FIRST thing that helps somebody realize something about themselves, that's totally cool and makes sense - fandom is a space where people can do a lot of identity-exploring in a way that's a little removed from their real life and all the stakes that implies. On the other hand, once you've thought about it, if fandom behavior/reactions is the ONLY evidence you have for a given identity, it's maybe a good idea to question whether that's more about you, or more about the ways our media landscape is weird and kinda warped. That said, mocking people who are still figuring things out is shitty and rude whether they turn out to be right in their fandom-spurred suspicions or not.
