What hot-button debate do you take most personally?

I have a niece with autism so I can't stand people who use that as an excuse not to vaccinate kids. Not only is it false information, it implies that autism is worse than a kid dead from various easily preventable diseases.

LGBT and Women's rights. Gay people getting married is not hurting you at all, nor is women wanting to get an abortion. Their lives, their bodies, their rules, not yours.
Re: What hot-button debate do you take most personally?
Gender issues are obviously personal for me. But also the cross between gender and rase issues feels personal as a woman who thinks it should be about women getting to choose for themselves. The way western culture judges Muslim women for covering up while at the same time treating female bodies as objects for public consumption offends me greatly. Sometimes I like to show skin, sometimes I want to be completely covered up, and either way it is my choice. Criticize the forcing of women of course (though don't forget to criticize the expectations Western culture puts on women in how they look and dress, or you are extremely hypocritical). But don't judge an individual woman's choices when she isn't judging yours. And listen to the voices of the women in that culture. Let them speak for themselves. And don't pretend like we've got it all figured out and are totally great on the gender front.
Religion is weird for me because it is personal in so many different ways. I grew up in a super conservative, fundamentalist area. I grew out of that when I grew up. So that stuff offends me. But I'm still somewhat religious, and I also get offended by people who insult people who do have faith. There is such a thing as a liberal, progressive faith. Faith is personal. It is okay not to have any religion, but it is also okay to have some. I don't go around insulting atheists. I just hate it when all religious people are painted as being the same.
LGTBQ stuff also, definitely. especially because I'm bi and my parents are super homophobic. They don't know I"m bi, and ever time they say something offensive, it feels personal, but I can't tell them that.

Even those beliefs, I find it irritating to discuss because I view them as a very personal thing that, in practical day-to-day living has little effect on people I interact with.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-11 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)It pretty much always leaps straight into armchair psychology and making wild speculation and judgements about people. "I feel sorry for people who ship friends because it means they must not have any friends of their own or they'd know what platonic friendship feels like and they wouldn't dismiss it." and then the buzzwords start getting thrown around and suddenly Saruman/Gandalf is something only racist abuse-apologist pedophiles ship and it's generally very distressing to me.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-12 01:42 am (UTC)(link)The muslim veil. The way some people praise muslim women for wearing it as if it were some kind of accomplishment instead of internalized misoginy and acceptance of patriarchal rules of women belonging to some male and therefore, not showing their body to the other males she doesn´t belong to. Their argument is always "that´s their faith, that´s what they want!!1" Yeah, well, they were brainwashed since kids and probably will be shunned by their families or honor killed by some entitled male of their families or communities if they decided not to wear it anymore.
I´m not saying it should be forbidden in Western countries like they did in some parts of France, that´s not gonna help, it´s just opening a Pandora box. But please, don´t pretend veiled woman are so liberal and empowered and free. Let´s call it by its name: brainwashing.
