Is Star Wars a useful or typical case that we should take as representative of either genre

This is a good question. I think the answer is yes and no.

Yes, in that it is a example of something incredibly popular that a lot of people would likely think of as an example science fiction even if they don't particuarly like the genre.

No, in that I personally don't feel it is the epitome of the genre... or even particularly representative.
