If you don't think people have strongly connected Steve Universe and LGBT stuff then you don't know much about the former or don't have any friends who are the latter.

I agree that people have strongly connected Steven Universe and LGBT stuff.

I'm not certain that means that SU has uncritically been absorbed into young peoples' vision of LGBT issues generally.

i was watching a livestream of an intersection in Jackson Hole, Wyoming last night and i saw young people trying to ship a hedge with Pearl from SU so pardon me if I really don't feel like the fandom is a text from which to base serious and productive discussion of real life LGBT issues

I'm not saying that it is a text from which to base serious and productive discussion of real life LGBT issues.

I mean, it probably is sometimes, but sometimes it's not.

I'm saying, I'm not sure how much of youth understanding of LGBT actually is drawn from or connected to Steven Universe and Steven Universe fandom.

Young people's show + strongly connected to LGBT stuff + SU often attached to LGBT stuff (I and OP and many others I am sure have circumstantial evidence to attest to this) + very little, if any, critical examination of SU that has made itself to the highly publicized level that the pro-SU&LGBT discourse has = it is ok for OP to wonder about SU being uncritically absorbed into AT LEAST SOME young peoples' vision of LGBT issues/life/activism

Why are you fighting this so hard?

I really believe it's important to be careful about how you characterize groups like this, especially ones you don't belong to. I think it's really easy to fly off on some wild shit, and it's really tempting to fall into sensationalist narratives, and I think that tends to have follow-on consequences for your understanding of other people and of the world down the line, and it makes it easier to be locked into your own perspective. I'm really serious about that.

What group don't I belong to?

If I've never made this clear in a thread you read, which is fine, you should know that I'm a big ol gay

Oh, yeah, but I read you as being older than the people we're talking about here? Like, not a teenager? I apologize if that was wrong or unfair.

I'm 23. I'm not sure what you're driving at here.

I'm not really driving at anything, except that I thought you were significantly older than the group of people we were talking about. I really hope I haven't offended.

Well, OP works at a college, so presumably the demographic creating the SU banner was between 18-22 years old give or take a few years. So...I'm not sure I follow you.

I guess I had thought you were older than 23?

I thought so, too, the way she kept referencing young people.
