Yes. You're correct. Harassing people is likely to make then go away.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-11 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
if they're already harassing other ppl then they really should go away

This is not a scenario where fighting fire with fire helps. This is a scenario where fighting with fire turns everything into a screaming mess of hostility.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-11 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
and when one side stops screaming, i win. not seeing a problem here

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2016-09-11 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Not necessarily. The kind of ship-hating nutcase OP describes are perfectly able to turn the mood of a fandom into a toxic place of hostility all by themself.

And even worse it can damage the source material. I've seen people saying that they won't watch a certain show with a terrible fandom because fandom activity is important to them and they know they won't be able to have a positive fandom experience with this show.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2016-09-11 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. It's especially sad when this happens to a show that has to be afraid of not getting another season anyway.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2016-09-11 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
how does ppl not watching it damage the source material?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2016-09-11 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
When it's a show struggling to get another season greenlit because not enough people are watching it. So, a fandom scaring possible viewers away can be kind of a serious problem.

I probably wouldn't classify a cancelled TV show as a "serious problem", but OK.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2016-09-11 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Tell that to the people working on it.

Oh please. If you work in entertainment, you expect to move around from job to job. That's the nature of the business.

they'll get work with another project or start their own

(Anonymous) 2016-09-11 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait... how does that damage the source material?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2016-09-11 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder if they're talking about when it crosses over into harassing creators?

I don't remember the specifics, but I think I remember hearing about how some game developers have stopped taking any sort of fan feedback and working with fans because of bad fan behavior.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2016-09-11 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Alright, but how does that damage the games they're developing?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2016-09-11 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
because not listening to fan feedback tends to result in shitty games

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2016-09-11 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Whatever, I think you're taking this way too seriously.

Nah, the more you push people back the less likely they are to start shit again. I've seen plenty of instances to know it's effective. They'll learn to leave others alone or at least keep it out of tags.
