Things that worked for kids then don't necessarily work for the kids now.

It could be anything from the video quality (I know kids that have a harder time paying attention to anything that looks even slightly grainy/dated) to the flow of dialogue to the music.

The reason why we love the old Anne is because it was tailored to our generation.

The older miniseries wasn't made for kids, though. I'm also a bit dubious that kids would have a hard time with grainy/dated video quality, since crappy animation is the mainstay of many peoples' childhoods and there doesn't seem to be any problems with that.
