Weird Things You Enjoy in Media

what are some details in tv shows or movies that most people probably either don't pay attention to, dislike, or don't care about that you enjoy?

Characters' handwriting/how they decorate their spaces.

Yes! I enjoy the wallpaper, the things people accumulate, the books that look like they're really getting read, children's toys, the mass cards and palm crosses stuffed behind the chromo of the Sacred Heart.

In Stranger Things, there's a bottle of Jean Nate body lotion on Hopper's bathroom sink. That object was the best, most descriptive, most period-accurate object that a character whose family was broken could have on their sink. I pay SUPER close attention to vanities.

Oh gods yes the handwriting. To the point that I've made sure to make my own characters' handwriting.

I think SOME people pay attention to it, but I'm a sucker for good character writing, and I can squee about those little things writers get "right" about characterization. Not even huge plot things, just things that are pleasing.

Yes, so agreed.

I'm definitely the person who pauses and tries to read the text in newspapers or books or whatever on shows. If I'm watching alone. I love it when they sneak easter eggs in there.

I love when there's a foreign language that I can try to understand, whether spoken or in writing.

Shoes in costume dramas/period pieces. Do they look like they've been mass produced or hand cobbled. I don't know why I notice, I don't even like shoes.

I like it when shows have characters who aren't pretty criers. I always kind of laugh when a character starts sobbing on tv and they're the picture of beauty and perfection with crystalline tears flowing gently down their face instead of a bawling, gross mess. Most people irl just don't look super attractive when they're full-on crying and I get a weird sense of appreciation when media reflects this

The biggest example I can think of for this is One Piece. Whenever a character in One Piece breaks down, they're generally a total, snotty wreck (even the pretty female characters) and I've always liked that.

Another example is Sam Winchester in Supernatural. I love watching Sam cry so much that I think I might have a genuine problem. He's always such a mess when he cries that it makes his devastation seem a lot more real

When the background flowers and foliage actually line up with the season the episode is supposedly set in. So often a show is set in the month it is set to air, but filmed at literally the opposite month of the year. That is how you get daffodils and tulips in full flower in September, bare trees in July, and the lush woodlands of January in tv land (if you are in the devil's hemisphere, then just move those months around til it makes sense for whatever weird shit you have down there). When a prop master or scenery coordinator takes time to get that right (especially in indoor shot dramas where it is really only seen through windows) it really makes my day.

I also like when it is set in the Canadian rainforest, because X-files nostalgia.

I like it when a character is a lefty, and it's not actually called attention to in the show, you just have to notice that they do handedness-dependent things with their left hand. It's just kind of cool to me when the creators don't default everyone to being a righty.

I love when background characters do weird or hilarious stuff when they are in a scene.

I also like watching dead bodies as closely as possible to see if I can see the actors breathe or move.

Little, tiny things they get right in historical fiction. Like "They got the right material and weave for that throw rug in the corner!" or "That dress is accurate right down to the last bead!"

Also, little things that no one else pays attention to, like shadows, the way a tree moves, or the way clothes fall on a person's frame.

Cinematography.

On the flipside, I notice a lack of background music a lot and it really bothers me

Characters actually speaking the language they supposed to be using rather than speaking in accented English, it's a small thing that pleases me.

When clothing is reused by a the same character in a season (even better if the items spans a few seasons).

I really like it when characters who switch bodies don't also switch voices. Example: the episode "The Great Brain Robbery" of Justice League where the Flash and Lex switch bodies. The voice actors did a great job with it

When a show/book/whatever has its own pop culture. A show within a show, like a soap or magazine serial that's casually followed, or a singer who gets mentioned every now and then. It makes the setting feel so much more alive to me! I love it.

I like when a prop sticks around, like someone gives the main character something and it becomes a fixture on the set and shows up in the background.

Not exactly a prop, but I love that Clyde didn't mysteriously vanish on Elementary.
