Re: Weird Things You Enjoy in Media

I like it when shows have characters who aren't pretty criers. I always kind of laugh when a character starts sobbing on tv and they're the picture of beauty and perfection with crystalline tears flowing gently down their face instead of a bawling, gross mess. Most people irl just don't look super attractive when they're full-on crying and I get a weird sense of appreciation when media reflects this

The biggest example I can think of for this is One Piece. Whenever a character in One Piece breaks down, they're generally a total, snotty wreck (even the pretty female characters) and I've always liked that.

Another example is Sam Winchester in Supernatural. I love watching Sam cry so much that I think I might have a genuine problem. He's always such a mess when he cries that it makes his devastation seem a lot more real

Oh gosh, this so much! I know pretty criers exist in real life, but a messy crier feels more realistic and that makes their sadness more poignant.

Also, I love seeing Sam cry too. Really, any guy messy crying is great. I'm sure I have a problem.

Jennifer Carpenter was awesome at this in Dexter. There was several times in the 7th season where she completely broke down and fully committed to the ugly cry with full body heaving at times. Fantastic, believable performance.

ayrt

I forgot about this because I generally try not to think about the last couple of seasons of Dexter, but you're totally right, Deb is a great example of a non-pretty crier who feels very real.
