I feel you OP, unfortunately I think gay men are immediately thought of as more "adult" and sexualized when compared to lesbians, people would be crying from day one if a kid's show had a canon gay couple

This. Usually women are more affectionate with each other, so they can be seen as Gal Pals(™) and their romance is not that obvious to the casual audience. But men being tender with each other is so provocative11!! so it doesn´t fly under the radar.
