Shows with focus on gay male couples exist though? I suppose no kids shows that I can think of, so there is that.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-14 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Outside of Queer as Folk (which I personally thought was awful) what other ones are there?

Really? Shows that have canon gay males as prominent characters and not used as a joke? I'm sure there might be some out there but not that many and nothing that's very popular.

On the contrary I can think of quite a few stuff with canon lesbians/bisexual girls: PMMM, Life is Strange, and Korra off the top of my head.

I think on a big enough scale I wish that we didn't have to choose between those things, and that there was both representation and fandom for everything.

That said, I personally would like it if there were more shows that had women inhabiting the variety of roles that men handle in fiction, not just because of representation but also because I would enjoy shipping it. It's frustrating to think about how common it is to have shows with, you know, five or six male characters with different personalities and roles that you can ship, and how much rarer that is for female characters. And I would personally prefer that to Steven Universe, because I don't like Steven Universe.

I don't understand the envy in this context. If you want to watch the show watch the show...? Or do you mean you wish there was a similar show but with gay male representation?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-14 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they mean slash in the specific sense of m/m and not f/f.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-15 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
That lesbians are okay and accepted even for kids shows but gay guys are just used as a joke or queer baiting. There is not many shows with canon gay/bi males that is taken seriously.

You should have seen the glory days of the Queer as Folk fandom...

I won't be impressed until they have a human woman who's confirmed to love another human woman. Human women loving monogendered aliens who coincidentally look like human women has been a thing for a long time. (Looking at you, Mass Effect.)

And yes, I know about that tweet about how Mr. Smiley and Mr. Frowny used to be in love, but the show itself never quite stated it.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-14 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
To be perfectly honest, I think this is kind of a ridiculous standard for a science fiction shoe. These are not real races, and trying to understand them in a way that's detached from the standards of our world seems... Strange. I feel like the most relevant thing is what they represent in our world.

This is my initial response to it, but not being gay, I will defer to those who are on representation. I do feel like they're doing what they can and they aren't at ALL playing the "well it's not really gay because aliens!" card - they're doing what will be actually shown, and even 10 years ago they might not have gotten away with lesbian alien rocks even. And don't get me wrong, SU and its ships are awesome! I just don't think we should really accept this and say "ok good we're there!" - the bar for real representation is still a little higher IMO.

But again - not gay myself, so take with grain of salt.

To be fair to the series, it's still a kid's cartoon on CN and there might be limits to what they can get away with. Keep in mind that aspects of the show as is HAVE already been censored in some countries...

It sucks, but yeah.

Ehh... they're essentially women on the show. Female pronouns, Steven calls the fusions "giant women," the fact that they have no gender was only said by Rebecca Sugar and not in any of the show's dialogue. Kids watching are going to perceive them as women. Some will probably have the insight to think "wait, does it really count, since they're rocks?" but others won't even think that hard about it.

About which tweet? I'm afraid I'm not familiar.

Idk, as a lesbian myself I'm put off by it. The only message I get is that lesbians are "other" and alien. That's not even touching the canon that the Gems are genderless in the first place, which makes the whole "lesbian" thing more hazy in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-14 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I just don't get why everyone wants their slashy ships to be canon so much. I don't want any ships to be canon. Fuck canon ships.

I'm queer, by the way.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-14 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
For some people, seeing their identities represented in media is important. It is also a step in normalization and reduction of stigma. It's OK that it's not important to you as a queer person, but I can definitely see why people want it.

Same here (and also queer). I hate it when ships become canon because they usually aren't the ships that I ship. I'd much rather nothing be confirmed in canon so that I can ship whatever the heck I want and have it be just as valid as any other potential ship.

Sadly I am not.

Why is it one thing at the expense of the other?

Also I can't help but feel there's more lesbian representation in kid/YA stuff is because they're "safer", and who doesn't like seeing two pretty women.

RatCat t-shirt! Is there a late 30s Australian drawing this???

(Anonymous) 2016-09-15 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel you OP, unfortunately I think gay men are immediately thought of as more "adult" and sexualized when compared to lesbians, people would be crying from day one if a kid's show had a canon gay couple
